Adaklu District is "former rainforest land". The rainforest was cut down after Ghana
became independant in 1957. Left behind are the big stumps from the trees and
grasses. There are two areas of development to consider when seeking excellence in
the stewardship of land. These are: agricultural development for the benefit of the local
people and reforestation for the preservation of the natural environment. When we
think of “restoring the land” we consider both of these. The land should support the
people living on it, without destroying the environment. The information on this page
is about work we have already done.

In Adaklu district where we live and work, there was not a single tractor
or any other modern farm equipment. All farm work was being done with
a hoe and cutlass (a long sharp knife). The people all farmed very small
portions of land (usually under one acre) because of the difficulties of working
the land. With Jake’s love for farming it soon became obvious that one of
the greatest needs and best means for helping to alleviate the poverty of people
would be to help them farm their land better. This could be done by teaching
them modern farming methods and by getting access to some equipment.
The pineapple farm is one of the projects that we are doing to assist with development.
We asked for prayer when we were looking for a pineapple market. At one point,
it looked like the fruit would start rotting in the fields due to lack of buyers.
Now people are calling us asking for more fruit than we have available every week.
We are now able to choose the best buyers in the best locations.
